NSBA Members Learn Secrets to Home Safety

On July 1o, NSBA members got the inside track on home security from Bryan Morris from American Detection Specialists, Inc. Drawing from his over 20 years of experience in the security field, Morris shared information about crime in Springfield and gave some tips on how to keep homes and businesses safe from criminals.

Morris shared that in the average home break-in, the criminal comes in through the front door at around 3:00 in the afternoon. The average length of time a criminal spends in a house is less than 10 minutes. However, in remote areas where they can work uninterrupted, criminals may take up to three hours to clean out a house. According to Morris, criminals will usually case a house for a few days to determine that no one will be home at that time.

Just a few of the helpful tips Morris shared with the group were to change the smoke detectors in your home regularly, keep pepper spray or other chemical deterrent in the home for protection, and to keep valuables in a secure location other than the master bedroom.
